The hype around this book is truly justified. My heart was full of love and emotion for these characters. This is my first book by Taylor Jenkins Reid, and I am in awe of her ability to make her characters feel so real. I was completely immersed in Evelyn Hugo’s world as if I was there alongside her, experiencing it all myself.
I knew I was going to love this book based on what I had previously heard from other readers, however it is only after reading it for myself that I can really understand the complex layers that the story possesses.
I knew that bisexuality was explored in the book. What I didn’t know was just how integral this was going to be in the story, and I think it was beautifully done. My heart ached for Evelyn and those closest to her. The revelations of truth behind her seven marriages was an incredible insight to a life so unfamiliar to me. The ending had me in tears and I always love to applaud a book that has moved me to tears. The constant unveiling of information made this an intoxicating read.

I think the wonderful thing about this book is that Evelyn’s life and how the public viewed her versus how her friends viewed her, is a reflection on how we as readers view this book. At surface level, the public thought Evelyn was purely a scandalous sexpot who married too many men. But once you started digging deeper into her story, the people around her saw her for who she really was. Similarly, before I read it, I thought “ooh, fun Hollywood drama with an interesting main character.” After I read it, I realised that Evelyn Hugo is far more than just ‘interesting.’ Her life, her hidden feelings added a profound intensity to this story that I still can’t stop thinking about.
An easy five stars!
